Some weeks you’re stuck buying “essentials” like “protein” and “vegetables” because you “already have a bunch of snacks in your pantry you need to finish” ??? Perhaps a handful of cola gummies from 2 months ago? (Foreshadowing.) But here are a few fun things I’ve found over the past couple weeks that I think you should add to the essentials.🛒
Downeast Cider Donut Cider
$8.49/4-pack – Whole Foods, Manhattan, NY
Certain corporate factions want you to believe that Pumpkin Spice Season is upon us. But for me, pumpkin spice is largely eclipsed by apple cider donuts. If you’ve never had Downeast, it’s the superior cider and a Boston classic. Genuinely, the worst part of not living in Boston anymore is missing out on new Downeast flavor releases. This one is one of my favorites, and it comes out every fall. The perfect bev for your yearly Over The Garden Wall watch. btw, don’t forget to turn over your can for a surprise👩🦲
Walgreens Peelable Banana & Pineapple Burst Gummy Candy
$1.99 each – Walgreens, Brooklyn, NY
To the product development team at Walgreens “NICE!! brand: I love what you’re doing in the candy aisle. Incredible innovation. Creativity like this will heal our economy!! I’ve reviewed the peelable mango candy, so I had high hopes for these. First, the bananas. I’m not really an artificial banana flavor lover, but how cute are these? They make a lot more sense than mangoes actually… I don’t find the flavor to be overwhelmingly banana, but more like a banana bubblegum. These are still kind of hard to peel and so so sticky, but it’s worth it to peel-and-reveal the cute white banana inside.
The pineapple burst gummies are a bit disappointing in the “burst” department, as theyre barely filled with any juicy center, but they still taste great. These remind me so much of a fruit gummy snack I had as a kid that I ended up going down a rabbit hole to try to figure out what they were. I’m picturing an apple fruit snack that was really chewy and semitranslucent. Welch’s? Motts? None of the pictures look exactly like what I’m looking for. But I was reminded of these: Florida’s Naturals Fruit Nuggets!
Does anyone remember these? Wow I can still taste them. Unfortunately they are super discontinued🥲 Anyway, go to Walgreens and give them two dollars!
Jarritos Cola
$1.50 – Brooklyn, NY
A new contender for my universally beloved and Nobel prize winning Cola Ranking! Jarritos makes a lot of good, affordable sodas and that’s pretty much what this is. I’d say the cola flavor is a bit muted, but I’m not sure why. It tastes like a cola…but maybe, cheap cola? This could honestly just be a really old bottle from a bodega. This would probably rank right under Fever-Tree for me, but it’s still a good solid cola.
10 bullet points or less:
pour one out for all the discontinued snacks of the 2000s
