Here it is! The inaugural post for 10 items or less, a new blog documenting various things I buy in grocery stores! I hope you see some items that you’ve never heard of, that are on your shopping list, or that are already in your pantry. Now the real question is – are you standing IN line or ON line?
Lay’s Wavy Cuban Sandwich potato chips
$4.59 – Walgreens, Brooklyn, NY
You’ll notice a lack of beef on this blog – I mean like meat, not drama, I’m happy to start some beef if the occasion arises. You’ll also notice a lack of McDonald’s, because this isn’t a fast food blog, and I don’t support genocide. Those facts may be why it took some prompting from my boyfriend to realize that these chips taste exactly like a McDonald’s cheeseburger. Although I haven’t eaten one in over a decade, the memory immediately flooded back to my tastebuds. These are the kind of chips you want to share with your coworkers and say, hey, don’t these taste exactly like a McDonald’s cheeseburger? And they’d reply, huh, they sure do. The attempt at a Cuban sandwich may be noted in the pickley-mustardy-meatiness of these chips, but the overall effect is McDonald’s cheeseburger.
Walgreens Gummy Mango Peelable Candy
$1.79 – Walgreens, Brooklyn, NY
I was surprised to hear that Walgreens had a TikTok-viral candy, and that it cost less than $2. These seem to sell out pretty fast, but I spotted them at my local Walgreens and picked up a couple bags. My friends and I quickly realized they’re not as easy to peel as it looks in the videos – our amateur peeling mostly resulted in sticky fingers and half-skinned candy. When I finally got a good clean peel, it was pretty satisfying. These almost remind me of mochi, with a firmer outer layer and soft, sticky inner gummy. Flavor-wise, these are faultless, and actually have a fresher mango taste than other mango candy I’ve tried.
Liquid Death Rest In Peach Iced Tea
$2.79 – Whole Foods, Brooklyn, NY
You can go to Whole Foods and stare at the beverage fridges for 20 minutes as a treat! And what a treat it is, to discover a canned bev you’ve never seen before. This tall boy is 19.2 fl. oz, and has a humble 30mg of caffeine per can. With only 6g of added sugars, I thought it might be pretty bland, but it’s actually pleasantly just-sweet-enough from the agave. A very crushable bev, essentially tastes like a Lipton peach iced tea with some vitamins tossed in there! Find me in the mosh pit with a Rest In Peach at the next Phoebe Bridgers concert.
Simulate Nuggs
$5.99 – Key Food, Brooklyn, NY
These vegan chicken-less nuggets are a staple in my freezer. I’m not going to tell you they taste exactly like chicken, but the texture is pretty spot-on for a freezer nugget. I’m eating these more for my mental health than my physical health, healing your inner child or whatever, but these do seem a little better for you than a traditional nugget for a similar price. Plus, there’s no weird hard bits of cartilage that made it through processing. There’s around 18 in a box, and 11g of protein per 5-Nugg-serving. Pair these with some barbecue sauce and freezer fries and that’s a whole meal for barely any brain cells.
Numi Matcha Toasted Rice Tea
$6.99 – Key Food, Brooklyn, NY
Unfortunately after depleting a bunch of my white blood cells on a new tattoo and new piercing, I got a cold. At least I look as sick as I feel 🤘 and I have this tea to heal me. I only started drinking tea a few years ago, but genmaicha has grown to be my favorite. I love the savory nuttiness of the toasted rice and subtle earthiness of matcha. Compared to a couple other brands I’ve tried, I prefer this one because those flavors last through a few refills of hot water with the same bag (sorry to any tea purists, I don’t know the rules). BTW did you know that there’s some evidence drinking matcha can ward off illness, even covid? Go green tea!
